• Portland's final training sessions take place next weekend at Tualatin Indoor Soccer center. They will include a scrimmage with the San Jose Stealth.

• The Jax's 16-game regular season opens Jan. 12 at the Rose Garden against the New York Titans. Both teams were 4-12 last season, sharing the worst mark in the National Lacrosse League. New York scored 195 goals to Portland's 153, but the Jax expect much greater offensive output this season.

• The LumberJax's 23-man roster averages nearly 6-2 and 202 pounds.

Three rookies and four second-year players are on the squad, along with third-year pro Brodie Merrill, 17-year goalie Dallas Eliuk and 14 players with at least three years in the NLL.

Twelve players are from British Columbia, and nine are from Ontario, Canada. The others are DJ Driscoll (Downingtown, Pa.) and Ryan Powell (West Carthage, N.Y.). Powell led the Jax in scoring (54 points) and goals (23) last season.
