State moving forward on five marine reserves
Waters off Cascade Head, other landmarks would be protected
Oregon is moving to establish new marine reserves to protect offshore waters near coastal landmarks Cascade Head, Cape Falcon, Otter Rock, Cape Perpetua and Redfish Rocks.
The reserves were recommended by the Ocean Policy Advisory Council, and granted limited funding by the 2011 Legislature.
Gov. John Kitzhaber will work with lawmakers and the advisory committee to finalize details of how state agencies will implement the new reserves, and lay out additional legislative and administrative actions needed to complete the process.
'Finding funding for the marine reserves program during a period of significant reductions in state spending demonstrates Oregon's commitment to completing the hard work the public has put into this process,' said State Rep. Jean Cowan, D-Newport, chairwoman of the Oregon Coastal Caucus, a group of lawmakers working on the issue.
