The fate of the Portland Fire Bureau's Station No. 1 has alternated a few times in the past decade.
What started as a bond-funded renovation for the station, at 55 S.W. Ash St., turned into the possibility of a move, propelled by concerns the ground could liquefy in the event of an earthquake. Later findings eased concerns about liquefaction, but a subsequent study determined the block would be prime for housing and retail development.
The Portland Development Commission is scheduled to discuss the proposed $28.6 million mixed-use project during a hearing scheduled from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at its headquarters, 222 N.W. Fifth Ave. The PDC will make a decision on the station's fate later this spring.
