GLADSTONE - After struggling most of the summer, Gladstone High School's top summer baseball team appears to be putting things together.
They played seven games in eight days ending last Friday and won four.
Last Friday's 10-3 win over Class 6A Beaverton put the Glads at 3-9 in their OIBA league and at 5-19 overall.
'We're not making nearly the number of mistakes we were making,' said Gladstone coach Casey Webster. 'We're getting pretty good pitching, our defense has been pretty good and we're competing at the plate….
'Beaverton threw their No. 1 pitcher at us and we hit him. They 10-runned us last time.'
Led by Dakota Braun (2-for-3, 3-run home run, 4 RBI) and Trace Webster (3 RBI), the Gladiators reached the Beavers for eight hits.
The Gladiators held off Glencoe for a 5-4 win over the Crimson Tide last Thursday. Webster and Ty Breshears led a nine-hit attack, with two hits apiece. Gladstone pitcher Justin Layton (2 strikeouts) threw a 2-hitter.
In other recent games, the Gladiators scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to edge Showtime of Vancouver 5-4, and they stung the ball for 14 hits in an 11-1 rout of Columbia River. Daniel Wallace had three hits in the rout of Columbia River.
The recent losses were at the hands of South Salem (10-5), Wilsonville (13-9) and Barlow (11-4).
