MAAD to host martial arts tourney June 17

Martial Artists Against Drugs is sponsoring a Martial Arts Tournament June 17 at the Tualatin Hills athletic complex, 15707 S.W. Walker Road.

This is a National Blackbelt League Pacific Northwest Regional Conference qualifier for the World Games. The event will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 7 p.m. All the profits will be donated to M.A.A.D.'s mission of helping our local at-risk children in the Portland and Vancouver areas get involved in positive structured after school sports activities.

At the event, there will be a rock climbing wall, a special stars and stripes Hummer and other special equipment sponsored by the Oregon National Guard. The Washington County D.A.R.E. vehicle and the Washington Crime Prevention will both have an information booth. There will also be a raffle and special drawings sponsored by local businesses, Kinko's, the UPS Store, Mortgage Wizard, MRP and Full Color Ink, along with concessions and other venders there to show their support.

Speed golfers will gather at Quail Valley

Golfers looking to add an aerobic challenge to their favorite sports are invited to try speed golfing this summer.

Each Monday evening, Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks will open at 8 p.m. for speed golfers at the cost of $5 per round. For more information, call John Hamilton at 503 645 7198.

Tickets on sale now for Jeld-Wen tourney

The JELD-WEN Tradition presented by Umpqua Bank, Oregon's biggest golf event of the year and one of five major championships on the Champions Tour, is returning this summer for its fourth consecutive year at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club.

Golf fans can now visit the tournament Web site to purchase admission packages. The tournament will be held at The Reserve from Aug. 21-27. Tickets can now be purchased online at www.jeld-wentradition.com or by calling 866-503-2003.

Tickets available online range from $15 for a 'Good Any Day' ticket to $50 for a weekly tournament pass with clubhouse privileges. Kids age 16 and under get in free with a ticketed adult.

Two special packages are offered at $40 and $60 for one or two weekly tournament passes, respectively. These packages also include parking, McCormick and Schmick's dining certificates and, at the $60 level, a sleeve of Nike MOJO golf balls.

Eight-week volleyball league to start soon

Registration has begun for the Fall 2006 season of United States Youth Volleyball at Westridge Park in Lake Oswego.

Boys and girls ages 7-15 years old will be placed on teams for the fall season beginning Sept. 13. The players will practice on Wednesday nights from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. and play on Saturday mornings from 10 to 11 a.m. through Nov. 4.

Early registration is $110 until July 1, $125 until Aug. 1, and $165 (if space permits) until Aug. 26. Multiple child discounts are available for two or more children.

Every player will receive a brand new volleyball, uniform and an official USYVL Gold Medal at season finale. The USYVL is a nonprofit organization and member of USA Volleyball.

Main Street Madness hoop due in Hillsboro

The annual Main Street Madness three-on-three basketball tournament in Hillsboro has been scheduled for Aug. 5-6.

The 2006 tournament is expected to feature up to 200 four-person teams competing in the two-day event as well as activities for all ages.

Now in its fourth year, Main Street Madness consists of a round robin competition followed by a single-elimination tournament. MSM also features a slam dunk contest, three-point shootout, free throw contest and other skill events.

Also included on Aug. 4 are two half-day basketball clinics for $40 per person.
