The city of Banks will turn into softball central this weekend as , for the second year in a row, it hosts the state tournament for 10- and 11-year-old girls.

More than 20 teams, will play in the 10U Oregon ASA State Tournament, which runs Friday, June 23 to Sunday, June 25. The weekend contest features the top 10U teams, (those with players who were 10 or younger on Jan.1, 2006), including four from Banks.

The teams will play on the Banks High School fields.

In addition to featuring some of the state's best young softball players, the tournament is a chance for Banks Aces Softball to raise money for a key addition to the three athletic fields.

Jenny Compton, coach of one of the Banks teams, said she remembers when the fields were built.

'It was when I was a sophomore at the high school,' she said. 'We called them the 'field of dreams.,'

There was, however, a missing element.

'We have these great fields, but we're still missing permanent bathrooms.' In an effort to replace the wall of portable toilets, the supporters of Banks' softball teams will be manning the concession booths all weekend long, will proceeds going to the bathroom project. The teams also are holding a raffle.

Compton said the program has raised nearly $30,000, and is making the final push for construction this fall.
