Tonkin Nissan to vie for tournament berth
Baseball: The Sherwood OIBA squad will face Lincoln in a best-of-three series
SHERWOOD - The Sherwood-based Tonkin Nissan OIBA baseball team will be battling for a spot in the 16-team season-ending tournament when it faces Lincoln in a best-of-three playoff series to be held later this week.
Tonkin Nissan, which is 14-9 on the season, enters the best-of-three series as the No. 4 team out of the Lolich Division. Lincoln is the No. 5 team out of the Olin Division.
The first game of the series will be played Friday, starting at 1 p.m. at Sherwood High School.
The second game will be played Saturday, tentatively starting at 1 p.m. at Gabriel Park in Portland. The third game, if needed, will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. at Sherwood High School.
The winner of the best-of-three series will move on to the double-elimination season-ending tournament, which will be held Wednesday through July 31 at Sunset and Lakeridge high schools.
Tonkin Nissan, if it advances to the tournament, will open tourney play Wednesday with a 1 p.m. first-round game at Sunset High School.
Tonkin Nissan, in its final game before postseason play, scored a 7-4 win over McMinnville in a game played Friday at Patton Middle School.
Prior to that, the Sherwood squad split a doubleheader with Lake Oswego in games played last Thursday at Lake Oswego High School.
Tonkin Nissan won the first game 6-4. Taylor Bonawitz pitched the first six innings of the victory. Joseph Balfour threw the final frame.
Lake Oswego won the second game 13-2.
