Old College Hall now open to the public

HISTORIC x Oldest educational structure in the western U.S. will host tours on first Wednesdays

Old College Hall is open for inspection.

The oldest building on the Pacific University campus - which also houses the university museum - will be open for visitors from 1-4 p.m. the first Wednesday of each month, beginning Wednesday, July 5. Admission is free.

Built in 1851, Old College Hall is also one of the oldest educational structures in the western United States. Over the years, the hall has been moved to three locations on the campus to make way for additional buildings.

Old College Hall is now located near the corner of Pacific Avenue and College Way on the campus's southwestern corner.

During an extensive restoration of Old College Hall in the 1970s, an original blackboard used during science classes in the 'early days' was discovered and is now on display in the second floor Pacific University Museum.

Leigh Creighton, wife of Pacific University President Phil Creighton and a docent at Old College Hall, said docents will be on hand during the open houses to answer visitors' questions.

Anyone who has an interest in Old College Hall or historical institutions in general is welcome to apply to be a docent. Contact Creighton at 503-357-3898 or send an e-mail to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
