UP soccer star wins national honor
Christine Sinclair, who led the University of Portland women's soccer team to the NCAA title last season, has been named 2006 collegiate woman athlete of the year. The announcement came Monday during the Collegiate Women Sports Awards program at Columbia University in New York.
Sinclair won the 30th annual Honda-Broderick Cup over four other finalists: Seimone Augustus of Louisiana State (basketball), Mary DeScenza of Georgia (swimming), Ashley Miles of Alabama (gymnastics) and Cat Osterman of Texas (softball).
Two other soccer players - Mia Hamm of North Carolina in 1994 and Cindy Daws of Notre Dame in 1997 - have received the honor.
Sinclair finished her UP career with 110 goals and 30 assists. The native of Burnaby, British Columbia also led the Pilots to the national championship in 2002.
