State issues water warning for Nye Beach
Ocean samples indicate high bacteria levels
The state Department of Human Services has issued a public health advisory for ocean waters at Nye Beach, near Newport in Lincoln County, due to higher-than-normal fecal bacteria levels.
State officials said beach visitors should avoid direct contact with the water until the advisory is lifted. Exposure to high levels of fecal bacteria in water can cause gastroenteritis, skin rashes, upper respiratory infection and other illnesses, especially in children and the elderly, who are vulnerable to waterborne bacteria.
The department also cautioned against swimming or wading in nearby creeks or discolored water in the area and to avoid water runoff flowing into the ocean.
Neighboring beaches are not affected by the Nye Beach advisory, the agency said.
