For biking and walking 8,024 miles!

8,024 Miles. 'That's equivalent to a walk across America and back,' noted Lynne Mutrie, a member of the Portland 'Safe Routes to School' project team, as she presented the 'Golden Sneaker' award to Lewis Elementary School Principal Tim Lauer in a June 9th noon ceremony at Berkeley Park, S.E. 39th and Bybee Boulevard.

Lauer accepted the award on behalf of the 50+ students whose repeated walks and bike trips to and from school over the past school year added up to that eight thousand mile figure, and the students then mobbed him and held aloft their award in triumph (shown).

The students had walked five blocks from Meriwether Lewis Elementary School for the ceremony.
