Police investigate fatal shooting in SE Portland
UPDATE • 18-year-old victime was David Douglas High School graduate
Police are investigating a fatal shooting in Southeast Portland Wednesday night.
Officers from East Precinct responded to reports of shots fired in the area of Southeast 135th Avenue and Sherman Street at 10:20 p.m. Wednesday. When they arrived, the officers found a man in a car suffering from one or more gunshot wounds.
The man was taken to an area hospital, where he died. Police identified him as Larry Ma, 18, of Southeast Portland. He is a recent David Douglas High School graduate.
Detectives said Ma was shot in his car somewhere north of where officers found him on 135th Avenue. Detectives believe that he was shot, then drove his car south for a few blocks before crashing into a yard.
Detectives still have not determined if the shooting was related to gang activity or drugs.
Detectives do not believe this was a drive-by shooting, nor is it connected to the two shootings earlier Wednesday morning in North and Northeast Portland.
In response, Mayor Sam Adams issued the following statement:
'There is too much gun violence in this city. While detectives are still investigating the circumstances behind Ma's death, one thing is clear: Easy access to guns means that altercations on our streets too often lead to murder,' said Adams, who has taken several steps to remove illegally-owned guns from Portland streets.
