Bevos get rare win over Tucson

The Portland Beavers, wallowing below .500 even after Thursday's 5-3 win against Tucson, will play at Colorado Springs in the first of four road games tonight. The Bevos return home July 4 against Las Vegas.

Portland (38-42) won for only the third time in 12 games against Tucson (50-31) on Thursday; the Sidewinders have the best record in the Pacific Coast League. Jon Knott's eighth-inning single keyed the win, which came before 11,572, the largest crowd of the season, on a night featuring discounted beverages.

The Bevos lead the PCL with 90 home runs. David Matranga hit a solo homer Thursday. Jack Cassel threw seven innings in a quality start, and Cla Meredith lowered his ERA to 1.39 with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Veteran infielder Justin Leone had the night off, on the same day he was chosen to represent Portland in the Class AAA All-Star game July 12 in Toledo, Ohio. Leone is hitting .285 with 12 homers and 49 RBIs.

Meanwhile, Jack Cust has not got on base in 34 consecutive games entering tonight's game.

Roger Deago (0-1, 5.40) starts tonight at Colorado Springs.
