OIBA playoffs hit high gear on Friday

The Oregon Independent Baseball Association kicks off its 2011 playoffs on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In best 2-of-3 seeding series, Friday games include: Tigard at Sunset, 7 p.m.; Barlow at Jesuit, TBA; and Clackamas at Southridge, 6 p.m. In best 2-of-3 elimination series, Friday games include: TBA at Beaverton, TBA; TBA at Westview, TBA.

Series winners will advance to the 16-team double-elimination OIBA Tournament which opens Wednesday with games at Sunset and Lakeridge high schools.

Little League Majors softball tournament continues

Action continues today (Thursday) in the District 4 Tournament at Alpenrose Dairy. Tournament semifinal games will he held at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. today. On Friday, the third-place game will be played at 5 p.m., and the district title game will follow at 7:30 p.m.

The tournament champion will then advance to the Little League Softball World Series, which starts Aug. 11 at Alpenrose.

Roni Illias hired to coach Beaverton softball

Beaverton High announced last week that Roni Illias has been hired as head coach of the school's varsity softball team.

Illias did not coach in 2011, but previously led Valley Catholic to three straight Class 3A state championships from 2007-09 and also took the 3A state crown in 2001.

Illias has 13 years of high school head coaching experience, including two seasons at Sunset in 2002-03, and has earned four Coach of the Year awards.

Diane Vance and Nicole Illias, two of Illias' assistants at Valley Catholic, will join her at Beaverton.

Illias succeeds Jim Marron, whose final Beaverton team went 0-15 in Metro League play and 1-22 overall.
