Leone picked for Home Run Derby

Bevos' third baseman is one of six contestants at Triple-A All-Star game

Justin Leone of the Portland Beavers is one of six players chosen to compete in the home run derby contest that serves as a prelude to next week's Triple-A All-Star game in Toledo, Ohio.

Leone, a third baseman who has 49 RBIs and is batting .285 for San Diego's top farm club, will compete in the HR derby against two other Pacific Coast League players and three players from the International League. The other PCL contestants are Nelson Cruz of Nashville (parent club Milwaukee) and Luke Scott of Round Rock (Houston). From the International League are Ryan Ludwick of Toledo (Detroit), Andy Marte of Buffalo (Cleveland) and former Beaver Kevin Witt of Durham (Tampa Bay).

Leone, who has hit 12 homers in 77 games for the Beavers this season, will play in the All-Star game, as well.

Witt leads the derby entrants in home runs this year with 22. Scott has hit 19, Cruz 15, Ludwick 14 and Marte 13.

Former home run derby winners include Bucky Jacobsen, then with Tacoma, in 2004.

This year's home run derby is set for 4 p.m. PT on July 10.

The All-Star game, pitting the PCL against the International League, starts at 4 p.m. PT on July 12. It will be televised by ESPN2 and broadcast in Portland on KKAD (1550 AM).
