Beavers plan fireworks; Knotts already hot
The Portland Beavers conclude their series at Colorado Springs tonight (6 p.m. start) before heading home to play Las Vegas in Tuesday's Fourth of July Game at PGE Park. A fireworks show will follow the 7 p.m. game.
Jon Knott went 4-for-5 with three RBIs at Colorado Springs on Sunday, hitting his team-leading 17th homer in the 13-7 Portland win. New pitcher John Hudgins, acquired from Texas in the Freddy Guzman deal, made his Bevo debut, working five innings and giving up four runs (two earned) and seven hits. Bobby Hill also drove in five runs.
The Beavers (40-43) have won four of their past six games.
The pitching staff continued to see changes, with Cla Meredith promoted to the Padres, Mike Thompson optioned to Portland and Eric Junge coming off the disabled list. Jack Casset was sent to Mobile. It remains to be seen when Thompson and Junge regain their spots in the starting rotation.
Thompson, 25, made nine starts with San Diego, going 3-2 with a 4.30 ERA. He was 5-0 with a 3.70 ERA in eight starts for Portland.
Prospect Jared Wells starts tonight, coming off a strong performance last week against Tucson.
'He was a little too amped up in his first two starts,' manager Craig Colbert says of Wells, who made the Class AA Southern League all-star team but won't play in the game because of his promotion to Triple-A. 'The biggest thing with him is his command.'
