LAKE OSWEGO - July 4th is nothing without fireworks right?
Dr. Barney, Southridge's AAA American Legion baseball team, made sure it created plenty of noise Tuesday night, spanking host Lakeridge 18-6 to win the Firecracker Classic tournament championship in five innings.
'We can't take all the credit for it. Lakeridge kind of stunk it up,' said Dr. Barney coach Don Fitzgerald, whose team rattled off its 18th straight victory with the win. 'We had 'em baffled with our baserunning.'
The game was tied 4-4 after the first inning, but Dr. Barney led 7-4 after the second thanks to three walks, an error, two wild pitches, a sacrifice fly and a bunch of stolen bases.
Dr. Barney boosted that edge to 10-4 through 2-1/2 innings, getting an RBI single by Kevin Coleman and a delayed steal of home by Mitch Edwards.
Lakeridge narrowed the lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the third, but then Southridge blew the game wide open in the fourth. That inning included a one-out RBI single by Coleman, a bases-loaded walk by Chance Howard and a three-run triple by Andrew Keller which made it 15-6.
Later in the fourth, Craigen Fitzgerald had an RBI single and Trent Oleszczuk added a two-run double for the final 18-6 margin.
Edwards pitched a complete game for Dr. Barney, battling through tough stints in the first and third innings before closing the game with a 1-2-3 fifth - all three on strikeouts.
'Edwards threw strikes and we played really good defense,' Fitzgerald said. 'We were consistent with our pitching where they'd walk two or three guys and then we'd get a base hit that would really hurt them.'
Dr. Barney was the only team to go undefeated (with a 3-0 mark) in pool play. That included wins over The Dalles, Lake Oswego and Sammamish, Wash.
