A 25-year-old Clatskanie woman died when she reportedly shot herself in the chest with a handgun after crashing into a ditch along Highway 47 near Vernonia.
The crash happened Thursday, July 21 around 12:50 p.m. near Big Eddy Park, seven miles north of Vernonia. Right after, witnesses say they stopped their car to see if the woman, Stephanie Rae Goulart, needed help. When the witnesses approached the car they say Goulart then shot herself.
Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings says the crash caused considerable damage to Goulart's car. At this time, there doesn't appear to be any crimes associated with the death.
Hastings says OSP troopers are looking into where she may have attained the gun.
