Pioneers tough in shootout
Two Oregon City High School teams hold their own with top all-star club teams
OREGON CITY - Oregon City coach Kurt Guelsdorf was encouraged by his Pioneers' showing in the open division of the End of the Oregon Trail Oregon City Shootout High School All-Star Girls Basketball Tournament, contested in the Oregon City area June 30 through July 3.
The Pioneers entered two teams in the high school open division, which included 60 teams, most of which were all-star club teams. One Oregon City team went 4-1, finishing second to tournament champion Southridge in the A-Bracket; the other team went 2-2. Southridge went on to defeat the River City Cats of Sacramento for the overall title.
'It was a good weekend,' said Guelsdorf. 'We don't have a lot of size, but we're getting tougher. To have two teams entered and do as well as we did in an all-star tournament is pretty encouraging.'
Guelsdorf noted that while the Pioneers split their top high school players into two teams, Southridge had only one team entered.
Oregon City Black, the Pioneers' top team, advanced to the bracket final through victories over Title IX Red of Seattle, the Big Island Selects of Hawaii, Colorado Springs, and Big Hoops out of Butte, Montana.
Vying for Oregon City Black were: seniors-to-be Sarah Boyd, Kelly Marchant, Whitney Chase, Paige Halberg, Jessica Vorpahl, Lindsey Shearer and Becca Schuh; sophomores-to-be Calli Jackson and Lindsey Warren; and freshman-to-be Brittany Knighton.
Vying for Oregon City's other team, Oregon City Red, were seniors-to-be Boo Fox and Liz Ralston; juniors-to-be Michelle Powell, Justine Belliveau, Karlie Gach, Jessica Anderson and Kenna Borgmeier; and sophomores-to-be Julia Austin and Jenna Halberg.
