Hobby shop offers toys for the young and the young-at-heart

Mad Dogz Hobby shop starts small, plans big
by: Barbara Adams, Mad Dogz Hobby owner Mike Hogue holds a Traxxas Revo racing car that will go up to 45 miles per hour, available at his new store on South Broadway in downtown Estacada.

Mike and Julie Hogue of Estacada have spent years selling cars through Ford dealerships up and down the Pacific Northwest. Now they're selling cars, boats, airplanes, rockets and blimps-right here in Estacada.

On June 24 the Hogues opened Mad Dogz Hobby shop at 356 South Broadway in downtown Estacada.

'I've always loved the gas powered scene,' Mike said. 'It intrigues me. I guess I'm just a kid at heart.'

Julie and Mike moved to Estacada from Seattle, Wash., with their 16-year-old son, Michael, in 2005 to be closer to Julie's parents, who live in Eagle Creek. They both worked at a Ford dealership in Seattle-before that they worked at a dealership in Oregon City. While their new business gets off the ground, Mike's concentrating his energy in the shop while Julie commutes to Camas, Wash, where she's working for the Ford Company.

Already, Mike is looking into expanding in the near future. 'The support here has been absolutely incredible. We'll have to expand real soon from the support we're getting.'

Right now the small shop, formerly a jewelry repair business, is filled with gas and electric powered remote controlled airplanes, boats, helicopters, rockets and trucks. They also carry kites, model paint, glue, batteries, chargers, remote control car and truck bodies, and helium-filled blimps.

Mike said that as the business grows, he will add train and race track sets, remote control UFOs and wall climbers, gas powered scooters and paintball equipment. His goal is to eventually open a store in Sandy, and possibly Molalla.

Mad Dogz Hobby is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information call 503-630-7112.
