Thomas Rotter drew a lead-off walk in the second inning and later scored on a wild pitch to give David Douglas a lead it would never surrender during its 9-3 victory against Centennial to open the A legion district tournament Thursday.
Estacada picked up the most lopsided win of the tournament 14-2 against Sandy, ending play on the mercy rule with a six-run burst in the fifth inning. Clay Edwards highlighted the charge with a three-run triple that bounced to the left-field fence.
'We're stroking the ball pretty well right now, and we have the team speed to move around the bases,' Rangers' manager Jim Fullerton said.
Gresham knocked off LaSalle 10-3 in a game played Tuesday, July 11.
AAA American Legion
Host Sandy picked up a 9-3 win against Gresham in the late game Thursday. The Pioneers took a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning after stringing together six straight hits for a five-run spurt. Eugene Wright highlighted the burst with an RBI-triple to center field. He also went the distance on the mound.
'Getting that first win is huge,' Sandy manager Garet Luebbert said. 'You want to get the momentum going your way.'
Southeast Portland defeated David Douglas 3-2 in the early game. The Scots put the tying run in scoring position in the last inning, but a ground out ended the game.
