The following information will allow you to set aside a very important day in September, so please clip this column and put it in a visible location.
The Gate House at the historic Jenkins Estate will be hosting their 'End of Summer Tea' on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 12:30 p.m.
Reservations are required and the cost is $20 per person. Walk-in seating is not available, but single seating reservations are welcome.
This tea is for those 7 years of age and older, and a special menu is provided for those under the age of 12. All others will be served a delicious assortment of tea sandwiches, freshly baked scones and decadent sweets.
Be sure to call 503-629-6355 to reserve your seat. The Jenkins Estate is located at 8005 S.W. Grabhorn Road in Aloha, and they can be reached at jenkinsestatethprd.com. I will be attending this special event.

Blueberry/Lavender Sweet Cake
Adapted from 'Cooking and Baking with Lavender' by Magdalena Bassett.
4 ounces butter
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons lavender sugar*
1 cup flour
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 cup fresh blueberries
Fresh English lavender flowers for garnish
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour one springform pan, flat bottom cake dish or pie plate. Whip 1 cup of lavender sugar with butter in a mixer for 2 minutes.
Add eggs, flour and baking powder; whip for 2 minutes. Transfer batter to prepared pan, smooth top and sprinkle with blueberries. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons reserved lavender sugar.
Bake about 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool and cut into thin wedges. Serve plain or with whipped cream, ice cream or yogurt.
*To make lavender or other herb sugar, place clean lavender flowers in a glass jar; add granulated sugar and more lavender. Keep layering until the jar is full, but be sure to remember to leave a little room to shake it from time-to-time.
I use stems of lavender in mine and also keep a jar of scented geranium sugar. Barn Owl has a good selection of scented geraniums, too.
