Holbrook throws a gem in Raiders' win

by: David Ball, Reynolds pitcher Brent Holbrook fires a fastball early in the Raiders' 2-1 win against Centennial on Friday night.

Reynolds pitcher Brent Holbrook protected an early lead to lift the Raiders to a 2-1 win against Centennial in the AAA district tournament opener for both teams.

Reynolds scored in each of the first two innings to build an early 2-0 lead in Friday's late game. Cody Ching capped the burst by lifting an RBI-single over the first baseman's head in the second inning.

Centennial cut the gap to 2-1 on an RBI-double by Beau Day in the fifth inning, but the Eagles couldn't get any closer. Holbrook made sure of that by converting strikeouts for seven of the teams last nine outs. He struck out the side in the seventh inning and finished with 15 for the game.

"He was really pounding the strike zone," Raiders' manager Kelly Larkin said. "I haven't seen a pitching performance like that in the last five years."

In other AAA legion games, East County got off to a hot start with a 15-5 win against Gresham in five innings Friday. Ryan Morales went the distance on the mound, and gave the Knights an early lead with a three-run homer in the first inning.

David Douglas used a three-run spurt in the sixth inning to get past Sandy 4-3. The Scots cut into an early deficit on a home run by Evan Jensen.

Grant shut out Barlow 10-0 in six innings.

LaSalle scored the winning runs on a wild throw in the sixth inning to get past Barlow 15-14 in the highest scoring game through the first two days of the A legion district tournament.

Tony Titrod laid down a bunt to bring across the tying run, and a wild throw to the backstop allowed Nate Bucher to come in from second base for the win. The game was cut short after reaching the 2 1/2 hour time limit.

Barlow appeared to be in control 13-7 after putting together a 10-run burst in the fourth inning. Zack Lumsden blasted an RBI-double over the left fielder to highlight the scoring spree.

In other A-level action, Centennial beat Estacada 6-5 for its first win of the tournament. Toby Harris supplied the winning margin with a home run.

Expanded district results will run in Saturday's edition of The Gresham Outlook.
