Former Portland Winter Hawk Jim Playfair (1981-83) has taken over as head coach of the NHL Calgary Flames, replacing Darryl Sutter, who stepped down Wednesday but remains as general manager. Playfair has been an assistant coach with Calgary for three seasons.

Also Wednesday, Montreal traded former Hawk winger Richard Zednik (1994-96) to Washington for a third-round draft pick in 2007.

• Some of the nation's best young female players will take part in the Oregon Junior Beach Volleyball Open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Woksup Restaurant, 17527 S.E. Stark St.

• A memorial service for A. Halim Rahsaan, longtime Knott Street Boxing Club and community advocate, is at noon today at New Song Community Church, 2611 N.E. Martin Luther King Blvd. Rahsaan died last week at age 62.

• The Portland LumberJax lost two players, goalie Aaron Bold and forward Tom Montour, in Wednesday's National Lacrosse League expansion draft. New York took Bold, and Chicago picked up Montour.
