Centennial, Barlow and Grant advance to A state tournament
by: David Ball, Barlow’s Drew Gilges slides in safely in front of Centennial catcher Mike Wilson to give the Bruins a 2-0 in the first inning Tuesday, July 18.

Centennial dominated action in the A legion district championship game, scoring 16 runs by the end of the second inning to dispatch Barlow 18-3 on Tuesday night.

The Eagles put eight straight hitters on base with two outs in the first inning to move in front to stay 8-3. The team drew five walks during the scoring spree and picked up two-run doubles by Tyler Acevedo and Troy Harris.

The Eagles put the game away with another eight-run burst in the second inning, stringing together seven straight singles at one point.

'We came out early and hit the ball around the yard,' Harris said. 'That seemed to suck the life out of them.'

Centennial takes the district's top seed into the state tournament, starting Friday, July 28, in Grants Pass. Barlow also advances to state, along with Grant, which beat Franklin 12-3 in the third-place game earlier Tuesday.

Barlow took a brief lead in the first inning when Josh Fandry beat out an infield chopper for a two-run single.

Additional coverage of the district championship and third-place legion games appears in the Wednesday, July 19, edition of The Gresham Outlook.
