Aloha breaks up sweep in series finale

by: , Aloha Knights

Aloha defeated Bend 11-5 in the series finale Sunday to prevent a series sweep. The Knights put their first four batters on base and took a 3-0 lead before Bend could register an out. Mark Samuelson led the attack by hitting 3 for 5 with three RBIs, while Ryan Selden and Matt Hibbitts also finished with multiple hits.

Knights' reliever Joe DiPietro pitched four shutout innings to seal the victory.

Aloha took a 6-5 lead in the 10th inning of the series opener Friday, moving in front on an RBI-single by Selden. But the margin disappeared in the bottom of the inning when a series of wild pitches advanced runners into scoring position, setting up Joey Wong's game-winning RBI-single.

The Knights couldn't escape an early 5-0 hole Saturday and went on to a 7-3 loss. Shawn Wayt paced Aloha by hitting 3 for 4 with two RBIs. The Knights (13-11) are 3-6 on their current road trip and fell to fourth place in the West Coast Collegiate Baseball League. Aloha wraps up its 12-game road trip with a series this week in Bremerton, Wash., before returning home to play Bellingham on Thursday, July 20.
