Cornelius rental shop a dream for do-it-yourselfers

EQUIPMENT -- Grand Rental Station loans tools of all sizes

Whether you're looking to aerate your lawn or dig a house foundation, Grand Rental Station in Cornelius has the right piece of equipment for the job.

The 3,800-square-foot store, which opened in early May, is geared toward contractors, remodelers, handymen and do-it-yourselfers.

'If there is something they don't have that's needed, they'll come here and get it,' said owner Ed Bacon. 'We're your neighborhood rental center.'

The store rents equipment of all sizes - smaller tools like lawnmowers or wood chippers may be rented by the hour, while larger machinery such as bulldozers or excavators can be rented by the day or half-day. The company also delivers equipment to your home or job site, with prices depending on size.

Bacon said that unlike other rental outfits, his business - a True Value franchise - caters specifically to the region of Forest Grove, Cornelius, western Hillsboro, Banks and outlying rural areas.

'We're not trying to service the entire Washington County,' he said. 'We really try to serve the nurseries, farms and those types of folks.'

Renting equipment makes sense for both homeowners and contractors, since many pieces of machinery are only used on rare occasions. Spending hundreds of dollars on a rototiller, for example, doesn't make much sense if it's only taken out of the tool shed once a year, noted Bacon.

'It's more reasonable to rent something that you use less frequently,' he said. 'Otherwise, you just end up with a garage full of toys.'

Bacon was first introduced to the rental industry through his father, who once owned a similar business. As the branch manager of landscape construction and maintenance for the Teufel Nursery, he also developed a strong background in construction and landscaping.

For that reason, Bacon said the learning curve is less steep than it was for his father, a banker.

'From construction to landscaping, I know the equipment and the trades,' he said. 'It's easier to help people when you know what they're talking about.'
