Sunset Magazine has singled out the Hillsdale Farmers' Market as one of its picks for Top 10 farmers' markets in the West.

The article, which appeared in the magazine's July issue, describes the market, held weekly in the Rieke Elementary School parking lot - located at 1405 S.W. Vermont St. - as 'happy-go-lucky,' highlighting its selection of goods from smaller producers such as Ayers Creek Farm.

Sunset featured Ayers Creek Farm in its February issue, and Market Manager Eamon Molloy said a reporter from the magazine had visited both the farm and the market. She later contacted him and said she'd liked shopping at the market and wanted to include it in an article about farmers' markets in the West. Molloy said he spoke with fact checkers from the magazine several times over the next few months.

But, 'I had no idea that the article was going to be titled the 'Top 10 Farmers' Markets in the West,'' he said.

Other markets recognized in the article included the Bellingham Farmers' Market in Bellingham, Wash., the Kapiolani Community College Farmers' Market in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Point Reyes Farmers' Market in Point Reyes Station, Calif.

Markets in New Mexico, Idaho, Montana and Colorado also made the list.

And this recognition has already made waves back in Portland.

'We have already seen new people at the market,' he said. 'The article will help us and the Hillsdale business community by introducing new shoppers to our neighborhood.'

Molloy said the Hillsdale Farmers' Market is also participating in the America's Favorite Farmers' Market contest, sponsored by American Farmland Trust.

'It's a fun contest designed to promote farmers, farmers' markets and the communities the markets are in,' he said.

Hillsdale's market is entered in the medium market category of the contest, and people can vote by visiting
