Gresham resident Carol May Smith, 76, died Wednesday, July 5. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 27, at Island City Cemetery, Island City.
Carol was born July 23, 1929, in La Grande, to Clayton and Edith (English) Hargett. She was raised and educated in La Grande, where she graduated from La Grande High School in 1947. She continued her education at Eastern Oregon College and graduated in 1951 with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education.
Carol taught elementary school in Prineville for a few years before enrolling at the University of Oregon, where she graduated with a master's degree in education in 1953. She then moved to Enterprise and taught high school in Harrisburg, Joseph and Wallowa.
On June 9, 1956, Carol married Roland E. 'Smitty' Smith on her parents' ranch near La Grande. She returned to the University of Oregon in the 1960s and earned a Master of Science degree in librarianship in 1967. In 1968, she moved to Lubbock, Texas, where she worked as a reference librarian at Texas Tech University for 18 years. In 1986, she retired and moved to Gresham.
Carol was one of the top players in a bridge club. She enjoyed sewing and knitting, solving jigsaw puzzles, gardening, reading, spending time at the mall and fishing at Wallowa Lake. She liked cats.
Carol was preceded in death by her brothers, Eugene Hargett, Vern Hargett and Dale Hargett. Survivors include her husband of Gresham; sisters-in-law, Helen Hargett of Toledo and Darlena Hargett of La Grande; and several nieces and nephews.
