An armed man is dead after he and a police officer shot their weapons Wednesday afternoon at a military recruiting center in the Eastport Plaza shopping mall.

An autopsy is scheduled for this morning, according to police.

At 3:41 p.m. Wednesday, the Portland Police Bureau received a report that an armed, suicidal man was driving to Eastport Plaza in outer Southeast Portland, reportedly to meet his girlfriend at the recruiting center there.

Police spokesman Brian Schmautz said an officer went to Eastport and was there for about 15 minutes before he saw a 38-year-old male, matching the description of the suspect, holding a handgun on the sidewalk in front of the recruiting facility.

The officer gave commands to the suspect who turned toward the officer with the handgun. Both he and the officer fired their weapons, and the suspect fell to the ground.

Because the suspect was moving, not responding to commands and still holding the handgun, the bureau's Special Emergency Reaction Team was called to the scene to take custody of the suspect, who received medical attention and died at the scene.

The name of the officer involved in the shooting had not been released Wednesday evening.

Homicide detectives and investigators from the East County Major Crimes Team were called to the scene to conduct an investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Barry Renna at 503-823-0255 or Detective Mike Geiger at 503-823-0768.
