Forest Grove's AAA American Legion baseball team dropped a best-of-three league playoff series against McMinnville last week, falling 13-2 in Game 1 on Thursday night and losing 4-1 in Game 2 on Friday.
The first-round loss bounced Forest Grove into a consolation bracket, where four teams battled for the league's final berth in the upcoming state playoffs. Unfortunately, Forest Grove fell 7-1 to St. Helens on Monday, eliminating the team from playoff contention.
Part of the reason Forest Grove struggled against McMinnville - which finished the regular season in second place in the league - was a fundamental difference in philosophy. Forest Grove carried only rising juniors and seniors on the team, while McMinnville featured several players that graduated from high school this past year. While the losses could not be entirely contributed to that fact, the young Forest Grove team struggled against its veteran opponent.
Forest Grove finished the regular season in seventh place and defeated Century, the league's 10th place team, in a one-game playoff for the right to meet McMinnville in the league playoffs. Unfortunately, three straight losses dropped Forest Grove from state playoff contention.
