Local swimmers shine at states
Forest Grove Swim Club members Prudence Rooker, Amelia Steinfeldt and Lauren Morrison swam at the 10 and Under Long Course State Championship meet last weekend at the Albany Aquatics Center in Albany.
The three Forest Grove swimmers who achieved qualifying times made the most of their opportunity, logging several impressive finishes. Rooker competed at the girls' 10-year-old level, while Steinfeldt swam in the 9-year-old division and Morrison swam at the 8-year-old level.
Rooker led the charge with a state championship in the 100-meter breaststroke, finishing first with a time of 1:32.42. Rooker also took third place in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 42.06 seconds.
Steinfeldt competed at the state championships for the second time in her career, but the first time as an individual qualifier. She took 24th place in the 50-meter freestyle (42.39) and 28th in the 100-meter freestyle (1:34.60). In addition, Steinfeldt took 25th place overall in the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 49.29.
Morrison, meanwhile, posted a strong showing at her first state championship meet. She took 33rd place in the 50-meter backstroke (57.57) and 34th in the 50-meter butterfly (1:13.55).
Rooker's win in the 50-meter breaststroke was no fluke, since she set a state record in that event last May as an 8-year-old. She maximized her qualifying chances by swimming in a total of six events over the course of the weekend. Her other finishes included seventh place in the 200-meter individual medley, 12th in the 50-meter freestsyle, 10th in the 50-meter backstroke and 10th in the 100-meter butterfly.
Tim Hamlet is the head coach of the Forest Grove Swim Club and would love to send more swimmers to the state meet or just teach local youths to swim. For more information, please contact Hamlet at 971-533-6647.
