West Linn in the summertime - a great place to be.
Warm weather is abundant and kids are out of school, and the city is overflowing with many events that showcase what makes West Linn special.
Last week was the first concert in the second-annual Tanner Creek Park 'Music in the Park' series, and hundreds turned out to picnic, mingle with neighbors, play in the fountain and take in the sounds of Soul Search, which had kids and adults alike crowding the dance floor by evening's end.
The second year of the West Linn Farmers and Artists Market in Willamette also is in full force, with produce vendors, artists and entertainers bringing hundreds of shoppers to the streets of downtown Willamette on Wednesdays.
The Garden Tour and Stained Glass Art Show is set to start at McLean House July 29 and showcase gardens on River Street, and movies in the park are under way Saturdays after dark in Mary S. Young Park.
Also in the park, coming up in August, will be the Mary S. Young Park Arts Festival, and in September, the Village of Willamette Art Festival takes to the streets in Willamette. Both offer ways to support local artists and get out and see what our city has to offer.
Be sure to visit the 50th Old Time Fair
One of West Linn's premier events is up this weekend, the Old Time Fair in Willamette Park.
This year, the fair celebrates its 50th anniversary. Firefighters who founded the event five decades ago will be honored at the ever-popular parade on Saturday morning, and past fair queens and princesses will be introduced before the coronation of the 2006 queen on Friday night. Carnival rides, the lumberjack competition, entertainment of all kinds - from American Indian tribal drummers to '80s hitmaker Tommy Tutone - Lions burgers and all kinds of food and a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday night promise to make this year's fair another one to remember.
West Linn is a community of very diverse views, and summer is an excellent time to come together and celebrate the things its residents have in common. Since there is an abundance of activities this season, it is a good time to get out of the house and enjoy recreation, education, entertainment and cultural activities.
This weekend's recommended venue for people of all ages is the West Linn Old Time Fair, a place where you can meet your neighbors and share in the fun - with a bit of history added for good measure.
See you at the fair.
