Milwaukie man drives pickup into Willamette
Andrew McNerthney, 27, cited for careless driving
Milwaukie resident Andrew McNerthney, 27, was cited for careless driving after he rolled his 2004 Dodge pickup down the Oak Grove boat ramp and into the Willamette River on the afternoon of July 16.
McNerthney and his passenger, Jason Carter, 32, of Gladstone, were both able to climb out of the vehicle and get to shore safely.
McNerthney told deputies from the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office he and Carter were "just fooling around" at about 2:10 p.m. when he drove too far down the ramp and his front tires went off the edge of the paved ramp and the truck got stuck in the water. He then, according to the police report, released the emergency brake in an attempt to back the truck out and that was when it rolled into the river and eventually became completely submerged.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office Marine Unit, as well as CCSO divers, responded to the scene and were able to attach a tow cable to the truck. It was removed from the water at about 3:30 p.m.
