First City street festival evolves

Oregon City’s First City Celebration this weekend celebrates summer with a daylong lineup of musicians, 40 artists lining the center of Main Street, shopping, wine tasting and downtown dining.

Main Street between Seventh and Ninth streets will be closed to traffic along with Eighth Street for the Saturday, July 28, First City Celebration Street Festival from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Event details can be found at downtownoregoncity.org.

“The music lineup for this year’s event is a real highlight,” said Elizabeth Fowler, celebration chairwoman. “We’re offering a full day of music.”

The First City Celebration Street Festival music lineup, this year extended until 9 p.m., includes Tumble Rye, Tiffany Carlson & Nicole Wells, Kory Quinn, Jesse Young, Keegan Smith, Will West, the Parson Red Heads and Kurt Van Meter. Music will be at the stage in Liberty Plaza.

“A lot of change is happening in downtown Oregon City — on the street and in our buildings,” said Lloyd Purdy, director of the nonprofit Main Street Oregon City. “This event is a chance for visitors to see those changes in process and support downtown businesses.”

In previous years, the First City Celebration in downtown Oregon City attracted more than 3,500 visitors, artists from around the region and wineries from the Willamette Valley. This event is free and open to the public.

“Mixing arts with food and beverage tasting all in the same area on the street is a recipe for success,” said Tonya Meyer, volunteer coordinator for the street festival. “This event is a great way to celebrate summer.”
