Main Street Oregon City: End of paving is in sight

Downtown Oregon City’s $2.5 million construction project is nearing its final stages.

During the past eight months, construction that began at the intersection of McLoughlin Boulevard and Main Street, has moved north replacing sidewalks, curbs, lighting, the water main and streetscape amenities along the way.

“This has been a huge project for downtown Oregon City,” said Lloyd Purdy, director of the nonprofit advocacy organization Main Street Oregon City. “Downtown’s business and property owners asked if this work could be done before the completion of the Arch Bridge restoration project, and that’s what the city has done.”

The contractor, Nutter Corp., is working on Main between Ninth and 10th streets. After completion of the sidewalk work there, Nutter will finish replacing the street pavement from curb to curb between Seventh and 10th streets. Paving has already been completed between Fifth and Seventh streets. The paving work is scheduled to take place in mid-August during the night.

“The employees of Nutter Corp. have gone out of their way to respond to the needs of business owners during this project,” said John Wren, project engineer for Wallis Engineering. “They’ve done an outstanding job of working in a challenging construction environment. Business downtown doesn’t stop just because of construction.”

Key elements include:

1. Filling gaps and/or replacing ADA deficient and crumbling sidewalks, curbs and ramps.

2. Installing bicycle parking, street furnishings and trees.

3. Constructing an elevated pedestrian crossing at Seventh Street and Railroad Avenue.

4. Adding new energy-efficient parking meters and lighting.

5. Upgrade to water utilities.

6. New paving.
