Man and dog found dead in I-205 lanes early Sunday

Oregon State Police are investigating the death of a 38-year-old man who was found lying with a dog early Sunday morning in the northbound lanes of Interstate 205 near Gladstone.

Eric Douglas Faircloth was believed by police to be a "transient with no known residential information." Faircloth's dog also died in the accident.

State troopers are still trying to determine how the man and the dog ended up in the highway’s northbound lanes. Troopers were called at about 3:04 a.m. Aug. 19, to the highway at the north end of the bridge crossing the Clackamas River, near milepost 11. There they found the man holding the dog and lying in the road.

Troopers said a Toyota Camry driven by 65-year-old Albert Carness of Vancouver was traveling north over the bridge when the driver said it struck an unknown object in the left lane. He stopped to see what it was and saw the man’s body.

About a minute before Carness called 911 to report the accident, state police received a call reporting that a person holding a dog was lying in the left northbound lane of the highway. Troopers were not able to get to the area to confirm the report before the fatal crash occurred.

The highway’s two left lanes were closed for about three hours during an investigation into the accident.
