Wanted: Your 1962 Columbus Day Storm stories

Few can forget the intense destruction and powerful human camaraderie resulting from tropical cyclone Freda, which struck the Pacific coast in the fall of 1962.

Join in an evening of community storytelling at the Museum of the Oregon Territory, 211 Tumwater Drive, on Thursday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m., where the topic is “The Big Blow: My Memories of the Columbus Day Storm.”

Oregon experienced a tremendous loss of human life, timber, livestock, property, radio towers and electrical infrastructure. As in any natural disaster, however, neighborhoods resourcefully recovered and made do without conveniences, strengthening their community bonds.

To honor the Columbus Day Storm’s 50th anniversary, Oregon’s museums are hosting events and exhibits featuring the oral histories of the men, women and children who experienced it firsthand. As history is really “in the details,” the Clackamas County Historical Society invites all to participate this free program, where attendees are the featured speakers.

Complimentary refreshments will be served. Bring any photos you may have from the Columbus Day Storm to share in the evening’s display. All photographs will be immediately returned, unless donated or scanned (with owner’s permission) to enhance the collection.
