Mayor resolves to 'shape up' city, self

by: SUBMITTED - Mayor Jeremy Ferguson, center, joins members of Milwaukie-based kettlebell studio the Warrior Room in front of City Hall to promote a fitness push.At the City Council meeting last week, Mayor Jeremy Ferguson proclaimed January “Shape Up Milwaukie Month” after personally committing to four workouts a week.

Almost 40 and a bit overweight, Ferguson decided it was time for a New Year’s resolution that would apply to the whole city. Milwaukie’s Stark Family Martial Arts gave him an honorary white belt at the meeting to support his efforts.

“There are so many way we can all do things to help shape up Milwaukie in general,” Ferguson said. “I want to see us all be physically fit, I want us to all be healthy, and I want to see a better business environment downtown.”

As for the business environment, he called for collaboration among businesses for mutual benefit. The city is working on revising downtown codes to encourage more types of businesses to open.

Ferguson’s workout schedule for this month includes Mondays at 11 a.m., Tuesdays at 3 p.m., Thursdays at 12:15 p.m. and Fridays at 5 p.m. at the Warrior Room, a kettlebell-focused facility in Milwaukie. He will blog about his workouts and occasionally invite his friends, family, local personalities and business owners to join him.

Another component of the campaign is ensuring access to the public.

Throughout the month of January, the Warrior Room will offer two free 30-minute classes for local seniors, followed by complimentary coffee courtesy of downtown’s Painted Lady Coffee Shop. The studio is also donating 10 unlimited packages to Northwest Housing Alternatives residents, a Milwaukie nonprofit that builds and rehabilitates affordable housing.

As an incentive to participants who work out there four times a week, Milwaukie businesses are building a grand-prize package of local gift cards and other treats. A name will be randomly drawn from the list of participants who accomplish the task.
