Pitchpipers celebrate decades of harmony

by: PHOTO COURTESY: OREGON TRAIL PITCHPIPERS - This historic photo shows how the Oregon Trail Pitchpipers goes back many generations, although some of the younger members pictured are still singing with the organization.A special presentation will honor three generations of musical directors for a popular Clackamas County-based, barbershop-style group.

Oregon Trail Pitchpipers sang aboard the “Harmony on the Water” cruise last year as Willamette Jetboats went from OMSI to Oregon City’s Willamette Falls as a destination for an “authentic Indian-style” salmon bake.

“(We) sang aboard TriMet light rail and buses, swarmed over and sang within Pioneer Courthouse Square, in salons aboard the Portland Spirit and in general brought sensibility and family values to our city,” said Tonesetters Quartet bass Steve Hurst.

The Oregon Trail Pitchpipers will present “Celebrate Harmony” Saturday, Feb. 16, with two shows — at 2 and 7:30 p.m. — at the Richard R. Brown Fine Arts Center, 950 S.W. Fifth Ave., Canby. In addition to the Pitchpipers, local group Sweet Adelines will perform.
