North Clackamas Christian School celebrated its 40th anniversary with an auction event on Friday, March 8, that included a unique picnic table created from a tree that had grown on the school property since its founding.

The Hayeses cut, planed and finished the 3-foot-wide tree into 8-foot-long picnic table with boards 3 inches thick.

“This is a tree announcing the soil of the soul representing 40 years of academic excellence in Oregon City,” said Principal Julie Phipps.

Students created class projects that were also auctioned, such as smaller painted picnic tables, with hand-painted umbrellas and kites. The third-grade class painted a landscape of the Three Sisters Mountains on an antique logging saw using their thumbprints.

Action organizer Colleen Filippello, an Oregon City resident and parent, noted this was an annual event and fundraiser, but it was particularly special as the school “really pulled out all the stops” to highlight its 40th anniversary.

The evening’s entertainment was a “Murder Mystery” performed by a company called Sherlock at Home that some of North Clackamas Christian graduates started.

“Lots of home-grown fun celebrating our roots,” Filippello said.

Phipps noted the school is not affiliated with any single church, and fundraisers and tuition from families have sustained this institution in lean economies.
