by: PHOTO COURTESY: JOE RISO - Joe Riso sketches out his heart mural due to be completed by the end of May with a 'big celebration event' of live music and art.Gladstone artist Joe Riso launched a campaign for his mural of a human heart to raise heart consciousness.

During the weekend, he began painting the mural at the Lotus Seed, 6 N.E. Tillamook St., Portland.

His project will only be fully funded if website visitors pledge $2,000 before Wednesday, May 1. Backers of $100 or more will receive one of his small original paintings of a heart, a block print and one of his drawings on a thank-you card.

In addition to painting supplies, Riso is hoping to raise money because his art van broke down and is “in serious need” of help getting back on the road safely.

“I need a working van to stay in business, for transporting art, getting to shows, painting murals — transporting supplies doesn’t really work on the bus,” he said. “My 6-year-old son goes to school a 45-minute drive away from where I live, and when my van broke down, I started missing time with him because I can’t get him to and from school.”
