Redland Elementary gets another 'active' principal

by: PHOTO COURTESY: OCSD - April AlbersThe Oregon City School District has announced that April Albers will be the next principal at Redland Elementary School.

Albers moved to Oregon City with her family in 2008 to teach in the bilingual program at Candy Lane Elementary. For the past four years, she has been the district's Math Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA).

"I am confident that she will be an outstanding leader at Redland," said Superintendent Larry Didway. "She is widely respected for providing outstanding curriculum and instruction leadership in the area of mathematics and coaching for K-8 teachers."

Albers replaces Cindy Fillis who still hopes to build a community garden in the school's courtyard before she retires in June ("Redland School gets $13,000 for garden," Feb. 6). The project hit a snag recently when crews hit a sewer line, and now the project is on hold until the district goes out for bids to repair the damage.

While teaching in Fort Collins, Albers was honored as Colorado Math Teacher of the Year. She is credited an "active leader" in OCSD's Title 1 school-wide planning process, and as the Math TOSA has worked with teachers across the district trying to improve math proficiency.

"I am really excited about working with the students and teachers and getting to know all the Redland families," said Albers. "Cindy's leadership has laid such a strong foundation at Redland, and I feel very fortunate to be able to build upon it."
