Straddling candidates scramble to reach Clackamas County voters
The Aurora Rural Fire Protection District has less than a third of its voters in Clackamas County, but the only the Marion County Voters Pamphlet lists any information about its six candidates in three contested races.
Since nearly 800 registered voters live within both Clackamas County and the Aurora fire district, northern votes could make a big difference for candidates in this expected low-turnout May 21 election totaling about 3,000 eligible voters. So candidates whose district straddles the border are rushing to inform Clackamas County voters of their existence.
Im correcting it in my case by doing mailings and knocking on more doors in Clackamas County, said Greg Leo, whos running against Deanna Singer Nibler for Position 5.
Clackamas Countys Candidates Filing Packet stipulates that candidates in special districts can pay $25 for inclusion in the Voters Pamphlet, but none of the Aurora candidates paid the fee.
If I had known this, then that would have been the best 25 bucks I ever spent on my campaign, Leo said. I dont want to be hard on election clerks who do a great job with limited resources, but I still think it would be a good public service to get that information out to potential candidates.
