Car enthusiasts are invited to begin their weekend at the corner of Eighth and Main streets with cars, coffee and camaraderie. Volunteer event coordinator Don Scott, an Oregon City resident since 1980, took this event series for a test-drive two years ago.

Participation by local car buffs looking for something to do on a Saturday morning has doubled since that first event. Most weekends last year, between 12 and 15 classic cars, vintage automobiles and hot-rod drivers gathered on the corner to talk shop and swap stories.

“Downtown Oregon City’s newly restored street, buildings and facades are a great backdrop to this social activity,” said Lloyd Purdy, director of the nonprofit Main Street Oregon City. “Don Scott is a great volunteer following his passion for old cars and this old downtown.”

According to Scott, Cars and Coffee is a chance for car enthusiasts to hang out in a very casual way. There’s no car show, street closure, judging or awards. It is a chance for the people who love to work on and drive their cars to get together.

“This is a perfect start to a car weekend, for people heading out to enjoy the open road,” Scott said. “This year we hope to organize a few drives through the surrounding countryside, ending up somewhere interesting for lunch, so bring your ideas.”

The motto behind Cars and Coffee is to “show up and hang out,” according to Scott. Amateur mechanics with a question can talk to others. A family out for a weekend drive can start their day at this event. A car club planning a trip to the coast or a tour to a cruise-in can rally at Eighth and Main as their starting point.
