Elderly man saved from wheels of semi in Clackamas

Fortunately for a 71-year-old Portlander who lost control of his bike and ran into a semi-truck, Brian Duval of Gladstone was driving through the Highway 224/Johnson Road intersection on Saturday morning.

In bi-weekly father-son ritual at the local hardware store, Duval, 34, was on his way to Lowe’s at 9:30 a.m. on July 27 to take his 5-year-old son to build a toy, when he noticed Lawrence Mascotte pedaling westbound on Highway 224’s paved shoulder in Clackamas. Duval was keeping his eye on Mascotte as he passed to make sure he had clearance to turn right.

“I was watching him in my rear-view mirror, and something made him lose control,” Duval said. “As soon as I saw him impact the semi, I stopped my vehicle and ran out in front of the truck to make the driver stop.”

Initial reports of the crash misrepresented Duval’s role in making Johnson aware that there was a problem before the semi’s rear wheels rolled over Mascotte.

“It crushed the rear part of the helmet—that’s how close it was to killing this man,” Duval said. “After we helped him from under the wheel, he was lucid enough to know that he had been on his bike and where his ID was.”

An American Medical Response ambulance took Mascotte to Oregon Health & Science University with serious injuries that Duval suspects involved swelling around Mascotte’s brain following impact. Oregon State Police troopers, who did not issue a citation to Johnson, were assisted at the scene by Clackamas Fire and Clackamas County deputies.

“It definitely pays to watch out for bicyclists,” Duval said. “I was luckily in the right place at the right time.”
