Clackamas Federal Credit Union recently donated $10,000 for radios to the Mt. Hood Search and Rescue Council. As climbing, hiking and water recreation reaches its summer peak, so does the need for dangerous rescues.

The donation enabled MHSARC to purchase 10 new In Reach radio units to allow search teams to communicate via satellite and text.

“It’s overwhelming to have Clackamas Federal Credit Union give us such a profound gift,” said Sherri Magdlen, director of development for Mt. Hood Search and Rescue Council. “Considering the time-critical nature of search and rescue, the ability to communicate with and track resources in remote areas immediately without searching for a signal is critical. These devices will both improve searcher safety in the field and ensure more effective coverage of active search areas.”

The council is composed of volunteers who continually put their own lives at risk — dangling off cliffs, traversing water banks and surviving avalanches — to help save lives. They must pay their own expenses and take personal vacation days to conduct searches.
