Patrons chase down Oak Grove register thief
People having Sunday brunch in an Oak Grove restaurant ran down a man after he stole a cash register and tried to take off in a stolen van.
Clackamas County deputies report patrons chased down the man in the parking lot of Hales Restaurant on McLoughlin Boulevard just before 11 a.m. and held him until officers arrived.
According to witnesses, the man entered the restaurant and meandered for a few minutes before ripping the cash register from the counter and fleeing to a Dodge van. He attempted to drive away, but crashed into another vehicle.
A number of Hales patrons rushed to the van. One talked to KOIN 6 News on Monday.
I just reached in, grabbed him, and pinned him down and held him until police showed, the man said.
Officers arrived to find the suspect being held down by a crowd of people surrounding the van, which they later discovered was stolen.
A knife also was seized from the vehicle.
The suspect, 51-year-old Robert James Finanders Jr., was booked into the Clackamas County Jail on counts of first-degree theft, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and a parole hold warrant out of Multnomah County. His bail was set at $15,000.
