Clackamas County Commissioner Jim Bernard was appointed to the Justice Reinvestment Grant Review Committee by Gov. John Kitzhaber on Sept. 27.

“Thank you for your time, talent and effort in this important role, and for your willingness to be involved in public service,” the governor said in a letter.Bernard’s term began Oct. 1 and ends Sept. 30, 2017.

“What an honor,” Bernard said. “The committee work done by the people of Oregon — and me — will make a difference in the future of criminal justice in our state. We will try and reduce recidivism and decrease our county’s use of imprisonment in an institution.”

House Bill 3194 this year established the grant-review committee. The funds allow the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission to award grants to counties that provide sanctions, services and programs designed to help offenders avoid returning to prison through demonstrated success in the community.
