Paramedics honored for Clackamas life saving

American Medical Response paramedic Dale Montgomery was honored on Oct. 4 for his off-duty lifesaving resuscitation of a heart attack victim during a soccer match in Clackamas County with the “Life Saving Award” at this year’s Oregon EMS Conference Awards Banquet in Bend.

by: AMR - Dale Montgomery“Paramedics are never off duty,” said Randy Lauer, AMR Portland general manager. “We all realize that we can be called upon at any given moment, and Dale’s actions in this case certainly exemplify the AMR mission of caring for people in need.”

On Oct. 15, 2012, Montgomery’s soccer team had just finished the first half of a game. He heard someone shout that one of the players on another field was having a heart attack. Montgomery ran to the victim and immediately began CPR. Montgomery led resuscitation efforts and used an automatic external defibrillator (AED) — after one shock, the victim began breathing and regained consciousness.

Players and rescuers were recognized by local media and the Clackamas Fire District Board with a “Community Life Saving Award” which reunited the patient, Gheorge Lupu, with his life savers. The event inspired Montgomery, and he is now leading a community CPR training initiative and teaching soccer coaches how to use AEDs. He also plans to expand the training in the future.

Two of AMR’s Reach and Treat Team members were also honored at the conference. Paramedics Barry Morally and Robert Aberle received the Oregon EMS Unit Citation Award. Morally and Aberle were among the 10 agencies honored for their role in an extremely complex rescue of a woman who was thrown from her horse and injured in the backwoods of Clackamas County outside of Colton on Aug. 7, 2012. Other agencies recognized included: Colton Rural Fire District, Molalla Fire District, Oregon Department of Forestry, Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office, Life Flight, Estacada Fire District, Clackamas County Communications, Clackamas County DOT Emergency Response Coordinator and Oregon Air National Guard.
